What’s the Point of Homework?
•Practice & build on what’s been taught in class
•Complete unfinished class work
•Prepare for upcoming lessons and assessments
•Practice responsibility and develop good study habits
•
How Much Homework Will Students Have?
Homework will be assigned daily. Students should spend 45 minutes most nights to complete homework (CPS guidelines). This might vary when studying for tests or working on long-term projects. I try to give approximately one-week notice for all major projects. Students should see me before leaving for the day if they need additional homework schedules. Parents can contact me if additional work is needed or if they still need assistance. My goal is to support you so that your child is successful.
How Will Students Know What the Homework Is?
Homework is written on the weekly schedule. Students will receive this schedule at the beginning of the week. Please read this with your child and check that their homework matches the models sent home. All assignments are reviewed before students are dismissed, and the class has the opportunity to ask questions and clarify assignments at that time. Independent reading is an ongoing assignment. I recommend 30 minutes daily—in addition to written work to help your child build needed skills in 3rd grade.
What Happens to Homework?
It highly benefits the student to complete all homework to the best of his or her ability and turn it in on time. I review all homework assignments that are turned in. Using the results of the homework, I adjust instruction accordingly. I will also give students recess homework time to help with concepts not understood or extra support is needed.
What If a Student Doesn’t Do Homework?
Homework is created with class’ needs in mind. I am very purposeful and strategic when planning lessons for your child. The most obvious effect of not doing or turning in homework is lower grades. Students need this extra practice. The fluency passages are really beneficial in improving speed and accuracy for testing. I also include needed vocabulary words practice and writing practice. When students don’t complete homework it makes it difficult for me to determine if they understand the material. Please see the class grading policy on late work and homework that is not turned in. I will create time within the week for students to complete missing assignments. Homework Recess will also be given at the teacher’s discretion and availability.
If your child has lost their schedule please contact me immediately. I will email or text a copy of the schedule.
